Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of many search results, composing an answer from multiple sources and linking to some of them. Evolved from the Search Generative Experience, they push traditional organic results further down the page and, for many queries, answer the user before any click.

How it works

An AI Overview is a retrieval-augmented answer: Google pulls relevant passages from its index and generates a synthesized response, citing a subset of sources. Appearing in one — as a cited link — depends on ranking well for the query and on having content structured as a clear, extractable answer. Overviews trigger most on informational and how-to queries and less on transactional ones, and their presence increases zero-click behavior, so measuring visibility means tracking citation presence, not just blue-link rank. The optimization is familiar: authoritative, well-structured, answer-first content that the model can lift and trust.
