Zero-click search

A zero-click search is a query the user resolves on the results page itself — via a snippet, AI Overview, or knowledge panel — without clicking any result.

A zero-click search is a query answered directly on the results page, so the user never clicks through to a website. Featured snippets, AI Overviews, knowledge panels, and instant answers all produce them. Zero-click searches are a rising share of all queries, and they reshape what SEO success means: visibility without a session.

Why it matters

When the answer appears on the SERP, the click that traditionally measured SEO success disappears — but the impression, and the brand exposure, remain. This forces two shifts. First, measurement moves beyond clicks toward impressions, presence in AI answers, and citation share. Second, strategy splits: for queries a machine can fully answer, the goal becomes being the cited source and capturing brand value; for queries that still need depth, the goal is to answer enough to earn the click. Fighting zero-click is futile; the work is deciding which queries are worth a click and which are worth a citation.

Where it applies

  • Informational and definitional queries — the most likely to be answered in-SERP.
  • Ecommerce research — where AI Overviews summarize options before the product page.
  • Brand and factual queries — knowledge panels and instant answers that surface facts directly.

What matters from each seat

  • In-house — report impressions and AI presence alongside clicks, so leadership sees value the click count hides.
  • Brand — treat being the cited answer as a branding win, not a lost visit.
  • Editorial — for deep topics, tease enough to answer the query while leaving a clear reason to click through.
