Answer Engine Optimization
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so answer engines — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity — can extract it and cite it directly.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so answer engines can extract a clean, self-contained answer and cite your page as the source. Where classic SEO earns a ranked link, AEO earns a mention inside the answer itself — in Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar systems.
How it works
Answer engines retrieve and chunk pages, then synthesize a response from the passages that most directly answer the query. Content wins when the answer is stated plainly and early — a definition-first sentence, a clear semantic triple (subject-predicate-object), a key-value list — and when structured data and clean HTML make the passage easy to parse.
Most of what helps AEO also helps traditional SEO: concise answers up front, strong information architecture, schema markup, and content that fully covers the question rather than burying the answer.
Example
For the query “what is faceted navigation,” a page that opens “Faceted navigation is the filter-and-sort system on a category page…” gives an answer engine a liftable, self-contained sentence. A page that opens “Let’s talk about one of the most misunderstood parts of ecommerce SEO…” gives it nothing to cite, even if the full answer appears three paragraphs later.
