Google Search Console
Google Search Console (GSC) is Google's free tool for monitoring how a site performs in Search — impressions, clicks, rankings, indexing status, and technical health.
Google Search Console (GSC) is Google’s free platform for monitoring and maintaining a site’s presence in Google Search. It reports the queries you appear for, your impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and average ranking position; which pages are indexed and why; and technical signals like Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, and crawl health. Because the data comes straight from Google, GSC is the most authoritative first-party source of search performance data available — no third-party rank tracker matches it for accuracy or coverage.
Key reports
- Performance — impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position, sliced by query, page, device, country, and search type.
- Page indexing (Coverage) — which URLs are indexed, and the reason any are excluded.
- Page Experience and Core Web Vitals — field data on loading, interactivity, and layout stability.
- Links — the internal and external links pointing to your pages.
- URL Inspection — how Google crawled, rendered, and indexed a single URL, including the canonical it selected.
- Crawl Stats — how Googlebot requests your site over time, and host availability.
Where it applies
- Every site with organic search — it’s free and first-party, so there’s no reason not to run it.
- Enterprise — domain and URL-prefix properties plus the API let you analyze millions of URLs past the dashboard’s 1,000-row cap.
- Migrations — the Page Indexing and URL Inspection reports are how you confirm the new site is being crawled, indexed, and canonicalized as intended.
What matters from each seat
- In-house — GSC is the first-party truth for reporting and the fastest diagnostic when something breaks; pipe it via the API into your BI stack.
- Agency and consulting — it’s the credible source for client reporting and the starting point of any technical audit.
- Brand and leadership — GSC trends translate SEO into terms executives track, when framed as demand and revenue rather than raw impressions.
- Engineering — Coverage, Crawl Stats, and URL Inspection surface the crawl and render issues that never show up in a browser.
The GSC glossary
Search Console uses a lot of specialized vocabulary. This glossary defines each term in plain language — filter to the Analytics and Technical categories on the glossary to see the full set, from domain properties to Discover performance.
From the field
At Oriental Trading, I once traced an 80% drop in reported search metrics to a broken analytics tag — not a real traffic loss. GSC’s first-party data is the backstop for exactly that moment: when a dashboard shows a scary cliff, Search Console tells you whether you’re looking at a real problem or a reporting bug, before anyone escalates it to the executives.
