Internal linking
Internal linking connects pages within the same site using hyperlinks, spreading ranking signals and helping search engines discover and understand each page.
Internal linking is the practice of connecting one page of a site to another with hyperlinks. It does two jobs at once: it distributes ranking signals — often called link equity or PageRank — across the site, and it gives search engines and readers a map of how pages relate. Strong internal linking is one of the few high-leverage SEO levers a site controls entirely on its own.
How it works
Search engines discover pages by following links, and they infer what a page is about partly from the anchor text and context of the links pointing to it. Links from important, well-linked pages pass more equity than links buried deep in the site, so pages you want to rank should sit close to the home page and receive links from relevant hubs. Descriptive anchor text (not “click here”) tells engines what the target page covers. Internal links also shape crawl priority: heavily linked URLs get crawled more often, while pages with few or no inbound links can go undiscovered.
Where it applies
Every site with more than a handful of pages relies on internal linking, but the stakes rise with scale.
- Ecommerce — category, subcategory, and product links decide which pages accumulate authority and which languish.
- Publishing — contextual links between articles keep readers moving and pass equity to evergreen pieces.
- B2B and SaaS — linking use-case and feature pages into pillar hubs builds topical depth around solutions.
- Enterprise — with millions of URLs, deliberate linking is the difference between indexed revenue pages and buried ones.
What matters from each seat
- In-house — bake internal links into templates and editorial workflow so equity flows by default, not by memory.
- Agency and consulting — an internal-link audit surfaces orphaned money pages and over-linked low-value ones fast.
- Editorial — link with descriptive anchors to related pieces while writing, not as an afterthought.
- Engineering — ensure links are real crawlable
<a href>elements, not JavaScript-only interactions engines may miss.
