Agentic search
Agentic search is when an AI agent autonomously browses, queries, and acts across sources to complete a task, rather than returning results for a person to click.
Agentic search is when an AI agent carries out a multi-step task on a user’s behalf — searching, reading across sources, comparing, and sometimes acting (booking, buying, filling a cart) — instead of handing a list of links to a human. It pushes the generative-search shift further: the “user” evaluating your content may increasingly be an agent working toward a goal.
Why it matters
If an agent shortlists products, compares options, or completes a purchase, your content and site must be legible and usable to software, not just to people. That raises the stakes on structured data, clear and consistent facts (price, availability, specifications), clean and crawlable pages, and machine-readable actions. It also reframes brand presence: being the option an agent selects depends on being the clearest, most trustworthy, best-structured source for the task. This is early and fast-moving, so the honest posture is to build strong fundamentals now rather than chase unsettled tactics.
Where it applies
- Ecommerce — agents that research and assemble purchases across retailers.
- Travel and services — multi-step booking and comparison tasks.
- B2B — agents gathering and comparing vendors during evaluation.
What matters from each seat
- In-house — ensure structured data and core facts are accurate and machine-readable; agents act on them literally.
- Engineering — clean, fast, crawlable pages and reliable structured actions become competitive requirements.
- Brand — the goal shifts toward being the source an agent trusts and selects, which rewards clarity and consistency.
